New to the forum and new owner of a 01 cherokee sport,i purchased it from the orignal owner . Since i got it sometimes the cluster will say "no bus" and the gauges will stop working, after reading around i read this might be the conections behind the cluster i took those out and cleaned them ( the looked like new but i still decided to clean them) after that i had also read that if thats not the problem it can be the crankshaft position sensor, but i never really had a problem turning the car on . Sometimes it would crank for a couple of seconds before it started but only when i remote started it , not when i actually did with the keys, anyways today i decided to check the conection of the cps and when i disconected it i saw it had some corrosion, i cleaned it and it still did the same thing, when the cluster is showin "no bus" and i accelerate the car alot it also turns off, thanks in advance for any help i can get

There are two types of NO BUS

1. NO BUS and the engine doesn't run

2. NO BUS and the engine runs

Yours is #2. This is not a crank sensor issue. A shorted crank sensor will prevent the engine from running.

You are correct in that this is a cluster issue. Did you clean all cluster connections thoroughly AND add dielectric grease? That dielectric grease is really necessary on cluster connections to ensure it doesn't get flaky. I'd go back and do it again with grease this time if you didn't do so.

hey thanks for the reply, i will check the conections again, so you think the corrosion on the cps conector couldnt be affecting it?

If it is at all related to the crank sensor, you will have an issue with the engine starting/running. If you don't have that and it doesn't sound like you do, concentrate on the CLUSTER.

Took the cluster out ,checked the conectors again and still no bus message

I did see that but saw it was mostly for the 98-99 ,

the electrical systems on the 98-01 are almost exactly the same. the problem is the PCM uses input from the gauges to decide how to control various parts of the engine. pretty stupid design if you ask me, it seems like the pcm should tell the gauges what to display not the other way around

There was a TSB about the connectors for the gauges, the connector even though snapped in can pop loose just enough when the cluster is put back into the dash to break the connection on some of the terminals. There is a fix for it but I don't know what it is, nothing I have is new enough for me to have worried about it before.

That's what I read, but I did some minor research on it and it seems tht it's basically the same part for 00-01. I have an 01 that displays "no bus" and a friend/mechanic said thats the route he would recommend taking to fix it. He noticed some of the pins were loose in one of those connections mentioned in the write up. But as u know it's a jeep and it could be anything, but that's what I'm gonna do. If u fond something different, let us know!

after trying to figure out wat the problem was for the no bus message i gave up. i ordered the new conectors for the cluster to see if that will help. just b4 i parked the car the no bus message went away, im sure it will come back again tho lol, hopefully the problem is the conectors.

I think ordering those connectors is a good idea. If it isn't that, you may be forced to replace the cluster

Try resetting your trip/mileage a few times. I randomly get a no bus and dead gauges while driving and this clears it up.

Edit: don't hold the button down to actually reset the mileage. Just cycle it a few times. I know it's not a fix to the problem but it has worked for me. I had a dead cluster for a week until I did this one day and it has worked for me ever since. Now I get a no bus message maybe once or twice a month.

so im going crazy and running out of $$ still have the problem, changed both of the conectors today and still same problem, changed the crankshaft sensor and nothing, got myself a computer code reader and doesnt show anything concerning the "no bus problem" , someone help meeee

I've seen guys get stuck with this before. The only fix was a different cluster.
