Default newly bought xj trans shot ax15 I NEED HELP

I just bought a 1993 2wd 2door ax15 4.0l cherokee and it will not go into third at all and i have to basically slam it into fourth for it to go in.

So obviously I need to fix this situation as I am to make this my daily.

The PO gave me a dodge dakota ax15 and a new arney clutch kit.

my question is will the dakota ax15 actually work? (before i pull the trigger on getting to teardown)

both ax15 are 2wd.
