New to XJs and cars, planning on doing most of my fixing. Got a P0455 code and am looking at the evap system. While I was under it I saw a heavily rusted line going down the driver's side. I am looking to find out whether this is an evap line or a brake line. What is this line? Brake line or evap?
On my 92 that line goes to the vapor canister - which explains your evap problem. Honestly it can't be that difficult to replace with some flexible copper brake line.

Oh ok, so none of the rusted lines are brake lines? I'm assuming the black lines are brake lines then? I just don't want to be riding around with anything dangerous, as I know the evap lines don't have the same potential danger as the brake lines
That bracket in your 2nd and 3rd pic is for the brake lines to the rear axle. Your line has swelled and is a brake failure waiting to happen. Replace it asap. Dont wait. You can bend and flare your own or buy a kit. That other line looks like the fuel line. It follows the same path as my 97, passing just above and behind that brake line. Black plastic or nylon lines are typically EVAP, but they can be steel as well. Doesnt matter as long as they do thier job.
When looking for fuel lines, you will come across Omix-Ada 17732.30 for the fuel line to the tank. Every vendor ive seen so far says it fits 94-98 XJ, ZJ, and YJ. That is incorrect. That line only fits the ZJ. It does NOT fit XJ. Not even close. For 97-98 atleast, the correct line is Mopar 52127896 (4.0L and 2.5L). The fuel line to the engine is Mopar 52100137 for the 4.0L, and 52100135 or 52100136 for the 2.5. I can only assume 97-98 are the same as 99-01.
Yep. And if that is the brake line, I would not drive that vehicle until you have replaced it.
NiCopp is your friend. The rest of the car will rust away before that stuff gives up, and it's really easy to work with.
I see you are a wiser man than perceived. Duckduckgo is the place to go if you wanna keep it on the down low...... You know... since they dont track ANYTHING you do.... so they say.
Holy crap, you guys need to act a little more serious about this. DO NOT DRIVE THIS CAR, THE BREAKS ARE GOING TO GIVE OUT AND YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO STOP. Alright I've done my part, good luck getting this sorted its not going to be fun but it wont be that hard XD
The one that is still metal is the brake line and it needs to be replaced, probably the rest of the metal brake line everywhere else too. NiCopp is the best stuff.
One of those rubber lines is a fuel line that should be metal. Probably should replace it with a metal one too, but if you can't find an original replacement piece you could go with PTFE and stainless braided.

this this this
The vehicle is NOT SAFE. Do not drive it or even trust it to stop if you move it.
if the rest of the brake lines are that bad then they ALL need replaced. I would put money on most of the lines and hoses being at least half this bad.
not to be a dick but to get across my point of how dangerous this could be. I apologize in advance for this.
If you dont know what is a brake line and what is not then you probably arent capable of replacing them yourself. I highly recommend professional help and it will not be cheap.

If I found that under my car then I would get it on jack stands immediately to replace. Once securely up there, for grins, I would push the brake pedal real hard so that rusted line would burst and that way the car could not be driven again until fixed.
