Default newbie here with Q's

Hello all, bought a 96 xj and have a few questions. The jeep has 185,000 on it, and runs and drives fine. It was totaled in a hail storm and i got it for 450 bucks. Anyway the tranny shifts but seems to do so in a slow manner, it likes to rev up to 3,500 before shifting. I bought a tranny off a buddy for 100 bucks it works and it's out of a totaled 95 xj. I was wondering if the tranny's would be the same because I heard some were chrysler and some foreign of some sort. I am planning on rebuilding the 95, I found the rebuild kit for 350 bucks but can't find a 3:1 reduction kit for the transfer. I think they make them but could use some help there. My plans for the jeep is to make it a trail rig for the mountians of Colorado, but I need to get this done first. Any ideas/advice would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Luke

The 95 tranny will work in your 96.

I know there is a 4:1 kit made for the NP231 by Tera Low. I've never heard of 3:1 kit. I think a 3:1 kit wouldn't be worth the expense. Your stock low range in an NP231 is 2.72:1.

Oh, well that would make more sense. I was told it was 2:1 and thought it seemed lower than that. Yes then a 4:1 kit would be much better. Thanks!

I found a locker for the rear for 320 bucks, it's just a lockrite but it'll do fine. Do you think an air locker in the front will tear it up or will it be ok for mild use?

I just installed Aussie lockers front and rear in my XJ. They are a "Lunch Box" style locker. Just like the Lock Rite. The Aussie's go for $239 a piece and are made for all XJ axles except the 27 spline Chrysler 8.25. So far, I LOVE the Aussies I've installed. They are simple to install, there is no loud noise or racheting commonly associated with this type of locker and they are AWESOME off road.

Did you do one in the front too? Where did you find these lockers?
