Hey all. Recengly purchased my 3rd Cherokee. '87 with 4.0-manual trans, part time t-case. Has 150,000 mi. This thing is a real survivor! Pretty much a base model other than AC & CC which work perfectly. Still has the retro 80s checkerboard white striped black upholstery. Prev. two owners were fastidious with maintenance. Doing a few repairs that were missed such as replacing tie-rod end at pitman arm. I've done a few other repairs following guidance from this site and decided I'd better join as I've gleaned much here and thought I might pay some back. My son has an '89 with some engine management problems I'll be trying to chase down. I'll likely have questions in the near future.

Planning on it one of these days when my less technically challenged wife can help download them. Going down to the shop now to replace that tie-rod end. Should be fairly straighforward given the minimal corrosion noted overall. Bought the right puller while I picked up the part.

Tie rod replaced. Went well once I got the proper part. Seems there's two options for this year. Mine has the larger diameter. Wish the first parts guy had told me that! I was underneath checking out what running gear I have. Definitely have the NP 231 as that what the ID tag states. Not sure about the tranny (manual) as the metal ID tag had stickers instead of stampings & I rubbed them off while trying to clean it! I've heard mixed reviews abouth the manual trannies back in '87 but mine works perfectly. Shifting is very tight & precise which make me wonder if it had been recently rebuilt or swapped for a different version. No evidence of any mods whatsoever so maybe I'm just lucky.
