I'd start by searching on here for how to refresh all your grounds. I'm not entirely sure on the older XJ's like yours but on my '91, a bad ground can cause some weird electrical problems. Also, you should check your battery, cables and clamps.

Older, newer, all of the above. It doesn't matter if it's a Model T or an F22 fighter jet.

I see that cruiser has found you on your second posting "89 renix 4.0 NEED HELP". If you do what he suggests, you have a great well of helpful information for 87-90 Jeeps.

have you checked the pcm harness?. i bought a refurbished one and it was bad right out of the box, i replaced it and no more issues, wiggle the harness around when its started and see if that stalls out the jeep. just an idea

Just a FYI, in a 89 jeep, there is no PCM. The factory labeled it ECM.
