Well while I thought I would have had an XJ by now, that didn't happen.

I started out looking at a 2000 which I and most of the replies to this thread thought was overpriced. It's still on the market BTW, which is a pretty good indicator that it definitely is. (No disrespect to the guy who is trying to sell it though.)

Anyway, I've been thinking lately that I may want to get one that isn't in as good of shape, one that may need some work, and rebuild it the way I want it. I'm pretty handy and can do some of the work myself, however as far as rebuilding an engine or the tranny, that's something I just don't have time for or the desire to do.

In the event that I would need to get some of this work done by a mechanic, could some of you guys give me just a rough idea how much it would cost to get the following work done? Maybe what you guys have paid in the past for this type of work?
1) Valve job
2) Rebuild the engine
3) Rebuild the tranny

I'm just trying to figure out if I got one that needed this type of work, what it would cost.

Thanks in advance, and hopefully soon I will be owning an XJ of my own -

Depends on the shop. Anytime your looking to rebuild an engine and or tranny, its going to be expensive. While I have never torn down a 4.0, I have rebuilt a few chevy 350's and it still cost hundreds of dollars in parts alone (and this is for the most common motor around).

I recommend finding one from a private party with some maint history on so you know what your getting into. If you stick with the older ones (early 90's) they are pretty cheap.

Just to give you an idea on price, I paid $2300 for a 94 sport w/ 143k. A little steep, but it was the 2nd owner and had maint records since day one. To me thats worth a little extra $$$. That doesnt mean I havent had to fix anything either. It seems like everytime I turn around there is something that needs addressed from a loose hose clamp, to a starting problem.

This is my 2nd Jeep and I while I am far from a mechanic, I feel it helps to be somewhat mechanically inclined when owning a Jeep. There good rigs, but can be a little quirky.

Thats probably a little more info than what you wanted......

for my 96 xj with 130k power everything, 3" lift 31's and tons of other stuff i paid a grand..sometimes it pays to have a few extra miles on an engine that will easily go double what it has..

my 87 has 175000 on the clock and she runs like a champ. tuned her up and replaced the os, little seafoam first and shes off to the races not really but she runs great. now its time to pretty her up a little on the interior and onto the paint and body work.
what im trying to say is, get one that runs decent and go from there, these xj's are a blast to work on and aernt to hard, so if you dont mind doing a little work, get a 1500 or 2000 dollar one and you should be fine, i've seen some out here for 2000 dollars in mint condition. so keep on lookin and good luck to you.

Kind of what I was trying to say.. Well put
Buy one for 2g, and you will laugh at yourself for thinking about spending more.

I bought mine for $1800 bout a month ago. 97 XJ sport had 108,000 on the clock. Got it at auction. Had been hit in the front but me and my brother n law beat the fenders back out (they were not that bad wheeling will do more damage to them) and were able to make the header panel work. I had his buddy build me a front bumper. After the tune up and cleaning it out I had maybe $2600 into it. Runs great and has power everything. Just keep looking you will find one. I looked for about 3 months before I found mine.

Thanks guys, this is exactly the kind of info I'm looking for - it helps when others share their experiences, what they've learned, etc.

I have decided that I am gonna keep lookin for one with slightly higher mileage but in good shape, save myself some money up front, and spend that money on mods. In the event that I need to rebuild something, I'll deal with it at that time.

Thanks again for the insider info - as soon as find one and make the purchase, I'll post some pics
