The guy at my 4x4 shop said I have a loose pinion gear in my rear end. I have a manual trans and when I shift there is a big clunk from te rear end. Tell mr what you all think about this and what I should do. Can't spend a million bucks here.
Thanks!!

u joint or pinion bearing. if the pinion bearing is toast then your ring gear is most likely wasted to. U have a stick so your prolly running 3.73 you can get it redone by somebody that knows what their doing or just gamble on a junkyard axle

Ok, So a mechanic said your pinion is loose. Is it side to side loose like bearing play or are you talking about the amount of rotational play?? If it's bearings replace them, if it's rotational play then could be ring and pinion wear. I don't know what your mileage is so not sure if it's worth fixing or just replacing. Also don't know what rear end you have a the moment so I recommend posting all your vehicle info and we can help a little more.

Stick, should have 3.07's. Make sure all your u-joints are good and a half inch of play sounds fine.

u joints are good...3.07s and 116000 miles. its a 99 ax15 4.0. and it is rotational play in the drive shaft. and when i shift and dont give it gas (just let the clutch out at the right rpm and everything) there is a clunk like it is loose.

Isn't there a certain amount of rotational play that is there because of the necessary "backlash"?
