Well...I bought a new Flowmaster to replace my OEM muffler with a hole in it. It turns out that the new muffler was just a few inches too short to meet up with the tailpipe behind it after I got it in there. So against my better judgement, and to avoid an argument, I just agreed with what my dad said. "Just clamp it in there with the impact and it'll be fine until you get it to the muffler shop." Well, time rolls around to get to the muffler shop and lo and behold, my muffler is gone, ka-put, vanished. I didn't notice it at the time cause well, it sounded the same without it (Flowmaster Super 44). And I'm just wondering, do I really need the muffler? Are there any benefits to having one versus just having the muffler shop sell me a piece of straight pipe to install? I have a new muffler ordered, but might just cancel it depending on what I hear here.

That has to be one of the best stories I've read on here. Sorry for your loss and all but that was hilarious to read.
To answer your question you should be required to a muffler.

It was amusing after it was all said and done, i was pretty pissed for the first little bit but meh...now im just like...Just Empty Every Pocket. And yes, i do still have the cat. I wasn't worried about it sound wise but from a more performance stance, like my flowmaster promised better MPG and power so im wondering if I'd get the same thing from having no muffler....
EDIT: nevermind...thanks for the input but it looks like i have to have a muffler in AR

Having a muffler is not required...look at the Neon SRT4. It came from the factory WITHOUT mufflers, it had resonators. Now I know the turbo sorta acts as a "muffler" of exhaust sounds but it did not have a muffler from the factory. Now with that, each state/ city/ county/ district/ village ect. has noise pollution ordanances that you have to be careful of. Simple Turbo Systems makes a twin turbo for the Vette that completely does away with the mufflers and its 50 state street legal. (But again, TURBO)

10 minutes ago I got home and noticed my recently installed flowmaster super 44 was tilted different than when I put it on. Time to crack down the clamps I see, I learn from others mistakes quite well.

The OP's story was better.
FWIW lots of folks use clamps without issue.
