New to me 2000 XJ classic, does it have keyless entry?
Hey guys,
Just purchased a 2000 XJ classic. it only came with a simple hard key. Id like to buy a fob for the keyless entry but I'm wondering if there's a way to tell if it has the keyless entry capability. Also If i purchase a key fob from a third party like Amazon, is there away for me to program it at home myself?
You can get an aftermarket kit on Amazon or Ebay that comes with 2 fobs and instructions on how to install it. Not expensive, I bought one for my 95 XJ for about $30 dollars.
If it's still available download your build sheet on the Chrysler web page. It'll say "remote keyless entry" if it has it. My 2000 classic does.

Nice, I found it. it does say that. However I'd hate to pay a premium at the dealer to have the fobs programes...
would you guys know if I was to get a Viper remote start keyeless entry, if I'd have to remove the factory keyless? or would the aftermarket system just work around it..? Sorry haven't had a chance to sit and so research on all this.
Id go for an aftermarket keyless entry that has a trunk release. Or the viper kit with the trunk release. Then rig it to release your gate so the pistons auto lift it lol. Thats what I'm gonna do. Adding in a 99 GMC jimmy wiper switch cause I already have wiper/defrost/ext idle and just got a fog light switch at the JY. So I grabbed a 99 GMC Jimmy rear wiper switch to replace my factory jeep wiper switch as it has low/hi/washer feature. It also has a "rear gate" button I will rig to the trunk release to emulate the FOB signal to the main RKE box and have an in truck rear gate popper. Its a momentary switch and I'm almost positive those after market trunk poppers just relay a hot 12v to the actuator. Problem is the XJ has no actuator. So I may rig an old working door lock module to yank on that rear gate handle linkage. Powering said actuator with the NSS's starter relay hot 12v of course, so you cant bump the button on the interstate and say goodbye to your purchases from the home depot. grounding through the starter switch ground so it can work with the key out.
If ya want help doing this I'm around. I was planning on doing a write up on it here after I finish my current write up on the overhead consoles. But if you want this just get the RKE with it and wait for my write up to do it. Why shouldn't our old trucks have features that sells an entire nissan rogue?

Several years ago, the fobs/ door locks in my 01 stopped working..obviously not dead batteries. A guy on ebay sold me a pre programmed circuit board and 2 fobs for a hair over 100. Still working. As stated earlier the circuit board is mounted inside the front dome light assy. Make sure you have one, or at least the connector/wiring before you start. You will have to search on your own...don't think i still have that link..xj key fob or something similar..he fixes and reprogrammes them , it was not a one off hey take my old one
