Default New Jeep Guy Needs Help

Im a new Jeep owner and i have a 92 Cherokee 2wd. Now ive posted stuff aasking about what parts i need for a 4x4 swap. I figured out what i pretty much need i just need to know if theres a front axle number and a transfer case number. The junkyard by me have all been pretty picked clean so i have to resort to finding used parts online. I appreciate any help i can get.

Your gonna want a 242 t-case and a d-30 non-disco front axle. Should match the rear in gearing most stock came with 3.54-3.55 gearing.

Hope this helps

Make sure when you find a new front 4wd axle that the gears match the same ones as your rear axle, otherwise you need to re gear. What kind of wheeling are you planning on doing? Because if you just want to convert to 4wd just for winter purposes you could go with a 231 transfer case as well. They are a lot easier, well at least near me, to get your hands on.

The main difference in the two is that the 242 has a fulltime 4WD application so that you can drive on or off road with the 4WD engaged. 231 does not have that option. I have the 242 and here in Tx I don't use it much but in the mountains of Ga when I lived there it was engaged all winter. If you encounter much slick roadways were you stay it might be an advantage to you.

Full time is on all the time. There is a differential built into the transfercase. It can be disengaged by the lever to give you just 2WD or full time or conventional part time 4WD. The 242 just gives you another option that the 231 is all.
Would you like 12 donuts or a dozen donuts or perhaps a bakers dozen. Just multioptions.

should bolt in ....don't know if this was mentioned but if you can get the trany from the donor you get the transfer case from..Makes things a touch easy to swap in...if not I think you at least need a couple pieces to alter your trany to work with it but not sure what exactly..

Also I have been told and don't quote me as I could be wrong, but was told the 242's have less rear driveline vibe issues then the 231's with lifts...That could be completely wrong but I am sure someone else can confirm better then I..

You are right. You have no vibes with a 3-3.5 in lift with a 242 t-case.

You will need the console and 4wd lever and linkage for the interior also.

Jeepers you need to get the transmission and the transfercase as a unit. The Tranny can be converted but needs complete disassembly to do so. This is because the tranny loads everything into the case from the bell housing end and the tailshaft is what needs to be converted. Not to say it can't be done but it is much easier to swap them as a unit. Don't forget the linkage and the interior console. If you find a 242 transfer case the front axle will be the non-disco type you want as that is all that the 242 Jeeps came with.
Post up any further questions.
