Default new fuel sending unit still a long crank

3 things 1: i put a new sending unit (fuel pump) in my 98 XJ and it stopped the gurgling at fill up but still long cranks or takes 2-3 cycles of the key sometimes.2: i noticed i don't have a fuel filter in my jeep is that normal? seems highly suspect to me.. and 3rd: does the crank trigger run injector pulse or just the spark on the long cranks it still has spark so i'm still having fuel issues

The fuel filter is part of the pump assembly.

Let us know if it resolved your issue. I have a long crank and I just replaced the entire fuel assembly...

I have a 94 and I have a fuel filter on the drivers side frame rail close to the fuel tank.

What is your fuel pressure on the fuel rail

Does it have an extended crank ONLY when engine is cold, ONLY when engine is hot, or both? Important distinction here as the way you approach it depends on the answer.

Some fuel pressure testing is in order here. Here is what I would do if this were in my garage.....

Hook up a fuel pressure gauge (can be rented at many parts stores) on the schrader valve on the fuel rail

Start engine and bring to normal operating temperature.

Observe test gauge. Normal operating pressure should be 49.2 psi (plus or minus 5 psi)

Shut engine off.

Pressure should not fall below 30 psi for five minutes.

If pressure falls below 30 psi, it must be determined if a fuel injector, the check valve within the fuel pump module, (unlikely if you replaced the entire fuel pump assembly) or a fuel tube/line is leaking.

An adaptor tool/hose included with the fuel pressure gauge can help you with this. Consult gauge manual for more information on this but here is basically how it works:

*Turn the engine off and immediately clamp the fuel line at the adaptor hose. Watch the pressure gauge and see how long it takes to lose pressure.

*If the pressure remains at 49 psi for an extended period of time then the problem is somewhere between the adaptor that is clamped and the gas tank. The check valve is very suspect for 96-01, but if you replaced the fuel pump assembly, this is probably not your problem.

If the pressure falls below 49 psi fairly rapidly then the problem is probably a leaky fuel injector. Does your engine start cleanly after the extended crank or does it run rough for a few seconds? Stumbling on startup can be the engine burning out the excess fuel delivered from the leaky injector.

you must have a fuel stainer below the fuel pump assy and a fuel filter in-line connected with a pipe coming from the tank.

the long crank is only when cold.....it was all the time and yesterday didn't start at all i had no fuel pressure so i changed the pump..i only noticed the long crank when i was headed home then a few hours later when i was headed out... once warm seems fine. i'm gonna look into fuel pressure today.
