New Engine in 2000 Jeep Cherokee 4.0/ AW4/ 242
Ive been chasing a slight rod knock on my Chero at idle. It runs strong and has no knock off idle. It is none of the accessories, converter bolts, etc. I just put in a new RMS, valve cover and oil pan gasket, oil pump, TPS, IAC. I have about $350 in parts over the last 1000 miles and do not wat to put any more in it. The head does have a slight crack and a little to no leak of coolant in the oil. I use about a quart of coolant every 500 or so miles. I talked recently about snagging an 06 wrangler engine but decided against it because of his price, I thought building a stroker but have not decided that route either. I did find a ultra low mileage 2004 Grand Cherokee 4.0 engine for $500. Will of course check ito ut before getting it. Will the engine work if I switch all accessories and mounts over? I have read that it will not work due to mounting issues. This is still a DD for the wife and want to drop a low mileage not cracing motor that we can drive for another 5+ years to avoid the dreaded car payment thing. My Jeep has 202,000 miles. Oil pressure is a bit low 20 at idle. I went to 20w50 and the knock is almost gone and oil pressure did go up. It does not overheat.
Will this engine work?
Thanx, Dan

I read the samething,I think the blocks are the same but the mounts are different,on the cherokee you have the metal mount on the block and rubber insert, the grand cherokee is a one piece mount, but has the same three holes where it attaches to the block,it does not make sence to me to change the entire motor and where the mount holes are drilled in the block,If you can look at the grand you maybe able to tell what the difference is. you can also call your local dealer and ask them,I think it is just the mounts and the block is the same, let us know what you do find out.
