Default new 88 chief

I recently traded my bike for a 88 chief. 4.0 5 speed. When I test drove it it idled a little weired but seemed to have plenty of power. I know this because I had to drive it up on a goose neck. When I got back it was idling more rough and when I would put it in reverse or first and attempt to go it would fall on its face and just jolt. I could floor it and it didn't do ****. Barely got it parked. He said he had it sitting for awhile but had stabalozed fuel and put a few gallons of high ocatane in it. I am worried maybe it studded up the bottom of the tank and cause it to suck something up. A friend also said that jeeps have this sensor that if it goes out it makes the jeep think its 40 below and it runs really rich. I don't know what happened and I need advice of what to do. Never owned one of these so I don't know what's typical with them. Thanks

HUNH? 40 below sensor? HUNH?

Cruiser54 and TJwalker are gonna have field day with this one!

Ok, first thing, take out plugs see what gap is (.035)and type ( hope they are copper plugs...) see also if they are oily. if not gap properly and re-install.
check dist cap and rotor are they worn?
88 right? do you have multipoint Fuel injection, (think you do, but somebodys gonna blast me on this if i am wrong)....get a fuel pressure gauge and check fuel pressure along the injector rail ( at idle and W.O.T.) There is a schrader valve along the fuel rail atop the intake manifold you can attach it to. should be around 39 (approx, again i may be off on number for your year).

Another thing could be the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor). its attached to the throttle body.

Also take off the IAC and clean it the best you can. reinstall see how it runs

also check for ANY vacuum leaks!

change fuel filter......driver side rear axle area.

if none of that pans out.......5 speed manual right?

Clutch/pressure plate might be going......transmission shifting feels ok though correct? how does it run at say 60MPH?

just a start, and get yourself a manual from autozone etc (Haynes manual) and check the workings of the jeep wonders out!

its a start and best of luck sir! and welcome!!!!

I didn't take it up to high speeds thanks for advice. I mainly just need to know the specific problems with this year. I know typical maintence... just worried about the sensor thing and stuff.

Just trying to put things out there to check man.

worst case scenario, you find a vacuum leak and fix it.

with no money involved. well about 5 bucks in hose fee.

holy crap world series, holy crap! texas, home run in the tenth cannot believe this!

anyway, good luck, check everything you can before throwin money at it, you know check plugs wires oil change maybe, compression test, fuel pressure test.....yadayadayada. you know what i mean.

I wish you the best sir!
