What is the difference in sound between an exhaust tick and a valve tick?

I would assume the valve cover would be a little louder and exhaust would be more of a buzz sound. But my XJ makes so many #$%% noises that I can never really tell what sound is coming from where.

You can use a mechanics stethoscope to find and listen to sounds.
