Need some help
Alright Lads, I bought a 1987 Jeep Cherokee Pioneer from my cousin a few weeks ago. It has a 4.0 Inline 6 with a 5-speed manual transmission. It is sitting on 36 in tires and has a slight lift to accommodate them. Anyways I know it needs a tune up but recently I put a gallon of gas in it and drove it 8 blocks up the street and 8 blocks back and got it home and it died. I put another gallon in it and did the same and it happened again. It seems that it is swallowing gas at an alarming rate. What could be the cause of this? Would love to know before I get too frustrated with it.
Can an exhaust leak affect this?
I am going to do the following for a tune up:

Well imo depending on if there is only 1 gallon of fuel present in the tank... 8 blocks a mile roughly... Im not sure how far the pickup drops down in the tank... You could just need more gas??
I would change out the fuel filter as well... Top her off... Do a full tune up... Then give her hell... Calculate fuel usage based on a full tank
Are you positive its dying because of a lack of fuel?
An exhaust leak at the muffler isnt going to hurt mpg
Throw a can of b12... Seafoam in the tank for good measure

Tuneup includes plugs, NGK for me, wires, cap and rotor.
Also be sure to click on the pink link in my signature and do posts 1 through 4 for starters. SUPER important.
Check to see if the intake manifold bolts have gotten loose and that all your vacuum lines are in good shape, especially the one from the throttle body to MAP sensor.

don't forget that a cold engine prompts a rich mixture till it warms up and the puter leans the mix back out.

Ok, if you're sitting on 36's, I'm going to ask this question....stock gearing? Large tires like that on stock gearing will yield crappy mileage...

@roninofako I don't know if it is stock gearing. I am unaware.
@fatbill I usually let it warm up for 15 min til' it idles down.

You mentioned you picked this up from your cousin? Give him a ring and ask if he did gearing...the other way would be pop your diff cover and check it out...probably not a bad idea anyways, if the vehicle is new to you, you should do all the fluid changes anywho...

He didn't either, he owned it for about 3 weeks. How would I check gearing to see if it's stock?

Pop the diff cover, drain the fluid, clean, and start counting teeth on your gears, here's a link to a jeepforum thread, or you can google or you tube it...

gasket up, put your cover on, refill up to the fill hole with gear oil. You now have your gear ratio and a freshly serviced diff!
