Need to resurrect this 4.0
Ok!-I will try that.
About how much does Rotella T3 cost? What is it? Do u use it with your oil or by itself?
Never heard of it, but that don't mean any thing. Where do u get it?
What is the deal with the oil filter?
Thanks!-jretzky
PS-that will be so cool if it works...cause besides the knock this engine has power and doesn't smoke.

T3 can be bought at Walmart by the gallon.
The Wix and Napa Gold filters have good flow and filtration and excellent anti-drainback valves. Alot of the other filters on the market are junk.

Rotella is a brand of motor oil, it's Shell's heavy duty diesel oil. You don't add it to your oil like an additive, it is motor oil, and a darn good one. Being a diesel engine oil it has some pretty good detergent ability. (it's also API rated for gasoline engine use, so no worries).

I'm sure that's true. Now, think about how often that race engine in torn down and inspected/freshened, compared to the engines in our Jeeps.
I just wanted the OP to make an informed decision. Take a new/cleaned & oiled K&N, and a new paper filter for your vehicle. Hold them side-by-side up to a light and see which you want keeping dirt out of your engine.

I personally inspected each of my engines at tear down for any places of undue wear in the engine. Most of all the cyd. walls, bearings etc. the first indicator will be during your oil changes by inspecting the oil and cutting open a quality oil filter like WIX, NAPA GOLD (WIX also) many things show there first some may indicate an immediate teardown to keep from causing more damage. The cost is high in the beginning but in the long run with proper care as directed the K&N is the cheapest and most effective in the long run.
Thanks!~Everyone, I bought a black colored oil filter from O'Reilly Auto Parts and that is on there now. Also I bought 2 oil filters from Carquest that are white in color and have Carquest on them. Any of these good because I was stocking up and have them now? I know this isn't much information...maybe I should read the boxes they came in.
What's the deal with the knock any how?
It is in the bottom of the engine.
Is it the piston rod at the crankshaft or the rod where it connects to the piston?
This is a good engine other than that.
Almost like saying, I have a bad heart, but other than that, I'm ok.

Next weekend I am going to Miles City, Mt. to buy the Rotella T3.
I have a friend who wife works for a city in Wi. And orders all the buses (motors, disel & gasoline) and she told me to put synthetic oil in all my vehicles.
She said that synthetic oil is better at friction and heat than any other kind of oil.
Hay!- I'm not knocking what you said about Rotella, beside that I think she drives a Toyota and not a jeep. I'm not knocking Toyota either, my other vehicle is a RAV4.
RAV stands for recreation active vehicle. I like my Cherokee better and the RAV was cool till
They made them all automatic trans. I love driving my 89 Laredo, especially with a 5 speed manual trans. Heard the new Jeeps have 6 speed man.
Getting off track...as of yesterday the Laredo, I drive, quit knocking in the AM.

rotella makes a full sythetic oil as well. Our jeeps don't have the tight tolerances that newer engines have, and don't require full sythetic. Unless you want to try and push your oil intervals past 3k.
So Rotella T3 comes in synthetic also.
Which would be better for a 4.0 L with like 160,000 miles on it?
Does Rotella T3 come in different weights or state that on is for high mileage?
Just want to make sure I get the right one.
Cruier54 are you using synthetic -Rotella T3?
Thanks-John

T5 is a blend or full synthetic depending on what you pick up. 10w30, 10w40 are common, up here we find 0w30 and 0w40 full synthetic.
T6 is the fancy one with the most certifications that is great in everything. Full synthetic 5w40. Obviously more expensive.
Being diesel oils all of these have the same or more zinc than "high mileage" gasoline oils. If you live somewhere cold and don't use a block heater I'd strongly suggest getting something with a lower startup viscosity. All are decent choices.
Ok!~Hey,thanks guys for all the info...
The full synthetic that I was running in my 4.0L is the 0w30.
I was wondering if that mean like a straight 30 weight oil?
No one ever said anything about the Car Quest oil filter.
Is that one any good, cause I still have two left?
Going to buy the Rotella T3, but now I have to decide on 10w30 or the 0w30.
Liike I said before my start ups in the morning are a lot more quite.
I thought this engine was a doomed.
Now I have a fuel injector leaking...hope it just the "O" ring. I can smell gas and see it leaking on only one, but all the seal were replaced last year.
Thanks!~again, John

SAE 0w30 is a fine oil, stick with it if you like. I would encourage a 0w or 5w as winter is coming. "Straight weight" refers to just SAE 30 - no W or anything - the applications for this are very limited and its thicker than molasses when cold. If you want to learn more about oil than you'll ever need check out http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/motor-oil-101/
Internet tells me that the Premium Blue filters from Car Quest are actually made by WIX. Lesser quality ones indeed look to be of lesser quality. Not sure who makes the Red filters but they look like there are quality control issues.
If you're going to replace a leaky injector you might as well upgrade
Do some digging around here about the "Neon" 703 or 784 injector upgrade.

Personally I run Castrol full Syn in all my cars and Wix/NAPA Gold Filters (made by Wix). The only way to compare filters is to first cur apart a Wix, they make a filter cutter for this but if your careful you can do it yourself without it. You cut around the filter at the top section of the filter then pull it apart and see the amount/quality of filtering material inside when you unroll it. Then take the filter claiming to be as good or made by (if they are made by Wix it will say so on the box) and compare the two of them. After that you will not question why people request a Wix filter when they have oil changed or you change yours.
7500 mi between oil changes that works fine for my Town Car and even it only goes 6000 max and usually no where near the mileage just time between changes. My Grand Cherokee 3 mo. 3000 mi I do tow with it sometimes the same for my Ford High Top Conversion van. Both diesels the Motor Home and 1 Ton 4x4 Crew Cab get the same time intervals and mileage.
The XJ is a horse of a different color for different people and I would never run one 7500 miles if your using this board period. A strictly non-off-road used XJ could get by with 3 mo. or 3000 miles for a full service. But most of ours are not mall queens but used for trails and other off-road use and see lots of dirt roads getting there.
Oil very seldom get worn out any more or even close mostly dirty from poor air filtering/cheap filters. I use good oil filters but change them every 1000 mi. first to check any engine damage and second to see how good a job my intake filtering is or is not doing. It's cheap easy and gives you a heads up on what happening with your engine. I use Castrol oil 10-30 in the XJ with 230,000 it had to many miles to start it with a Syn might start leaks in small places that never leaked before.
