NITROUS!
haha J/K
Yeah just stroke it. Too much to deal with a v8. Gets expensive. chassis/unibody will get ripped apart w/o reinforcing. Too much work IMO..but if i had tons of money and nothing to do with my time then i'd do it.

what's nice about the six's is they can build tons of torque and will run forever, but, if your like me and just love the sound of a V8 then a chevy 350 is probably the most common, I thought about a 5.9 out of a grand cherokee, but, everyone said don't do it.
if it's an '82, and it's a 4.2 liter, then it's a fullsize jeep. probably a 2 door.
you're on the wrong forum...as already shown by the two yahoos above me. a 4.2 can't be stroked. it would require a 4.0 swap, a fuel injection swap, etc. and considering that the v8 amc 360 is bolt-in to an '82 fsj cherokee, that would be easiest. even an AMC 401 would fit without much issue.
go to http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/ to get the information you need. On this forum, I would say under 20% of the members even know what your jeep is...the only experience alot of them have is with jeep cherokee XJ's, comanche MJ's, and grand cherokee ZJ's and WJ's. not FSJ cherokees and J-trucks.
btw, here's a pic..should be close to what you have

this is what we have

you're welcome.
a suggestion;
get a 4.0 liter engine (head, block, oil pan)
pull your crank and rods from your engine.
take the crank, rods, and 4.0 pistons in to a machine shop. have them machine the snout of the crank down to match the old 4.0 crank, and have them balance the crank to the weight of the 4.0 pistons. shouldn't run more than about a hundred bucks.
port match your 4.2 manifolds, or aftermarket 4.2 manifolds, put the motor together, install, and enjoy your 4.5 liter carburated stroker
