need help plz
my 88 will die from time to time without sputtering or anything just shut down... starts back up in a few seconds and smells like gas, tonight it kinda sputtered and if i gave it gas it would do anything just barly run and die. so i let it sit for about ten minutes started right up drove fine for a few miles and did the same thing, it smells alot like gas so im assuming that its flooding itself out i made it like a quarter mile from my house and walked the rest to let it sit for a while. im gonna go get it or try in an hour or so does anyone have any ideas why it started doing this??
replace the pcv valves going from the valve cover to the air box, or at least clean them out. if they're cracked/broke/missing, then that could also cause issues.
also, another thing which could cause that problem is a bad fuel pressure regulator or O-ring in that general vicinity.

What is your fuel pressure like. They sell a guage at AZ for like 25 bucks (great tool to have). Wondering if your fuel pump could be going out although that wouldn't explain the fuel smell!?!
My next thought would be some injectors failing?
Still thinking Renix is me a Blue's specialty so we will figure it out for ya.

I own a Renix (87) and HO (91) XJ and I've worked through quite a few issues with both. I have to agree with Stryker for a first plan of action. Pick a fuel press. gauge at your local Autozone. Got mine for around $30. There is a pressure test port on your fuel rail. It is the threaded cap looking thing. Twist it off and there is an air valve looking thing under the cap. This is where you plug your fuel pressure test gauge in and just turn the ignition to on....The pump is electric so you don't even have to crank or start the motor to get an accurate test. You should have 31 PSI. If this is off by more than 3-5 PSI your fuel pump is bad and you will have to replace it. If the gauge reads 31 PSI then your fuel pump is good. Next test the fuel pressure regulator. Remove the vacuum line from the fuel pressure regulator at the front of your fuel rail. The pressure gauge reading should jump up to 39 PSI. If this does not happen then your fuel pressure regulator is bad. As long as the gauge jumps 8-10 PSI after removing the vacuum line then your regulator is good.
i bought the pressure guage and did the tests... pump seems fine but when i took the vacume line off the regulator it would go to 39ish psi then drop to like 30 31 so i replaced it and it still dies. startiing to get frustrated.
after puttin a new fuel filter in it starts up evey time right after it dies. and now it will run for like 30 seconds and slowly die every time it seams to be like 20-30 seconds, i need my jeeeep any ideas now??
