Hey, my 1996 cherokee is stuck is 3rd gear but has reverse and shifts fine. But it's missing a throttle valve cable (kickdown cable) could that be the cause? It shifted fine until that was removed

Does it 'shift' fine when the engine is turned off? If that's the case, then your clutch is out. Happened on one of my cars, and always had reverse.

If it's stuck but still 'shifts' while it's running, I'd say tranny issues or maybe replace that cable....but I'm not an expert. Start with the cheapest thing first.

An AW4 automatic tranny without the cable connected? It will not run or shift properly! That cable is an important part of the system and is not a 'kick down' cable like other vehicles. The cable has direct influence on shifting.
