For the thermostat, it usually the housing with the top hose and maybe the heater hose as well. Two bolts hold it on. I believe 1/2 socket. U can use the paper gasket, but RTV sealant (hi temp blue or red) will work great. I used the red on water pumps and the thermostat housing. Cover the mating surface. As long as u have enough on it. It should not leak. Go around every bolt hole. Think of it as icing on a cake, u cover the area with it where it belongs.

Get a manual. Look through it. I heard chiltons it the best. I am old school. Take it out the best way u can and look at the pictures! Kidding about the pictures!

i was talking about removing the hose on the engine side top of engine (thermostat housing) and fill at the bottle still. And to answer your ? yes a cap will cause this problem. A cooling system is made to run on pressure water boils around 216deg, two things help that coolant has a higher boiling point, and pressure the more pressure the higher the boiling point so for every lbs of pressure it raises your boiling point a certain amount. so if you have a leak in your rad cap or bottle it will not build the pressure therefore you will boil over sooner. and if you hear air arou nd the hoses on the bottle pull them of and look for cracking on the nipples of the bottle. Good Luck
