Engine light has been on for a while now. I did a smoke test this weekend. Evap system to the tank pressurized so not the fuel cap. Only smoke came out of the oil fill cap and the fuel vapor vent filter. The solenoid is closed, how would I check to make sure it opens? Should be either the solenoid or the leak test pump right? TIA.

Common issue is the Leak Detection Pump(found mostly on "California Emissions" vehicles).
Testing the vent solenoid is easy, this is a "normally closed" valve, so with a vacuum hand pump, apply vacuum to either port on valve.....should hold with out dropping...then apply battery power to the solenoid to open it. Tap the power to it off and on several times and keep applying vacuum each time you close it.. I have seen many where they test good, but after you have cycled it a few times it suddenly fails to close completely..

There is a diagnostic test for the LDPV, Leak Detection Pump, I'll dig through my stuff and post it when I find it.

Awesome, thanks for the info. I was worried I might damage the solenoid if i held it open too long, the vacuum pump and tapping the terminals sound slike a great idea.

I finally got around to testing the solenoid. It worked when I had VAC on the vac line but it wouldnt open on the other side? I replaced the oil fill cap a week ago as well since the stock one broke on me but the light is still there. :/
