Default Need help asap! removing shifter

im in the process of removing my tranny cause my throwout bearing grenaded...(or something grenaded) i have everything disconnected except for the two main tranny bolts and the shifter. its an 85 xj 2.5l 4 speed.. i just cant figure out how to get my shifter disconnected so any links or tips would be appreciated! ive been searching around and cant find anything so in the meantime ill be searching for one of my two manuals... thanks!

on mine i had to reach my hands up around the tranny, push down on the shifter and twist it. i have the AX 15 tho.

well i have the AX 15 so its a little different I assume...

but what I had to do was take all boots off and get it so you can see the circular entry of the shift lever into the tranny.

there is a locking piece that holds it in, and the way to take it out is (as previously mentioned) sort of like a medicine bottle. you have to push down and turn it at the same time so that it unlatches. I think I turned to the left to get it off. You do not have to do this from under the jeep, I've done it a lot of times just inside the cab. in fact it sounds way harder doing it under the car.

yours might require something else to come off before you can do this, if its even the same sort of system at all.

you have an ax4 or an ax5.

where the shifter goes in is round. lift the shifter boot up, push down on the ring inside and twist counterclockwise. shifter will lift.


to do it properly, you're supposed to remove the center console and pull the shifter from the top after you remove all of the boots.

thanks guys. i kept looking for some kind of pin and it was pissin me off...but i actually found it in the manual (imagine that!) it was easy, where the shifter goes on the tranny in it is kinda square. i just had to unbolt 5 little bolts and it come right off haha. thanks for tryin to help! i appreciate it
