its call double cardan joint/CV joint. its completely rebuildable. 2 u joints, and a centering ball, and dust seal. I got my parts from ALLJEEP.com Good customer service, fast response.
Center ball yoke
CV Ball dust sheild
Then for the u-joint, i went to the local parts store and picked them up.
Pic of what the ball dust seal looks like

It's commonly called a cardan joint around here, but is a CV joint of sorts. If you want to test to see if that's what causing your vibration, just remove the front driveshaft and go for a ride. If your vibration is gone, it's the front driveshaft and your mechanic might have nailed it.

That is the joint on the front driveshaft that connects to the Tcase. After you install an SYE, you can then run one of these shafts in the rear as well.
Yeah, you can rebuild them, and for a hell of a lot less than $400!! The ujoints are about $24 a piece. I think with the ball and shield and both joints, it's somewhere around $75. Then just a little of your time pressing out the old joints and putting the new in (which if you don't already know how to do this, now is a good time to learn). It is not hard and is definitely something every Jeeper should know how to do.
