Here is my situation. I dropped my gas tank to see if it needed to be cleaned out because the jeep I bought had been sitting for 2 years so I dropped it. The fuel pump was really loud so I figured I would replace it.Dropped the tank and pulled the fuel pump and damn!! I have never seen so much rust and corrosion in my life. It was really bad. This jeep actually ran pretty fair.Tank and all is shot. No fixing that one. So I call my local junk yard and they say sure we have one that will work. I am happy as all get out all day get of work go pick up the tank. I am thinking man this thing is beautiful. Get it home and realize something is not rite. The wireing and the sending unit is all different. So I call them and they tell me that it came out of a 96 and there computer said it would work. Well my eyeballs say it won't. LOL! Can I use the tank and just get a new sending unit or do i have to have a tank for an 89? It is a nice clean tank for pretty cheap. Any help would be awesome. Thanks in advance.

My guess, and it's only a guess, is that the tanks are interchangeable but the fuel pump modules could be somewhat different. Your fuel pump module shot?

 

Yea its cooked I found a fuel pump and sending unit so all I meed is a working tank.

 

You have a Renix xj so the non renix (96) isn't interchangable as the pump goes and as far as any electric, sensor, brakes(iirc) basically most anything. The gas tank well if they are the same shape etc well maybe,But you basically need to stick with a renix xj for parts to work.
