Default Need help 1992 Jeep Cherokee!

I needs some help changing my serpentine belt. I got the old belt off and loosened all of the bolts to the ps pump like the Haynes manual said. However, I purchased a drive rite serpentine belt from pep boys: part number 5060975DR and when I went to put the new belt on it doesn’t fit? I get to the last ps pulley and there is no way the belt is going on. I called pep boys back and they stated it was the right belt for my Cherokee 4.0 w/Ac. I’m not sure if they made two different serpentine belts for Cherokees that year?

compare them side by side

take two scwer drivers and hang them both on one
the use the other to stretch them out
if the old one is obviously larger that the old one then they gave you the wrong part

Get a Gatorback serpentine belt. They cost a little more than the cheapy belt wherever you buy it but, it lasts way longer.

I'm positive, I am putting the belt on the Right way. I have never replaced a serpentine belt before. However, even with the PS pulley push all the way in-wards I still don't have enough slack. Approximately, the belt comes about half way to the pulley. I'm thinking they gave me a belt for a Cherokee with no AC?

As one bass player to another...

Compare the lengths.

Doublecheck the routing.

Make sure the belt is fully seated in the pulleys... especially the crank pulley where the belt has to "scoot" under the timing-probe tube.

I could be wrong but I think the Idler pulley has a fairly large adjustment range. You may need to back off the adjustment rod to the minimun end of it's range, this with allow enough room to get the belt on. Sometimes as the belt stretches, the adjustment rod is used to compensate for slack in the belt, often the adjustment rod ends up at the maximum legnth of it's range over the life of the belt.

If the belt is still too short, it may the the wrong one.

Hope this helps,
Capt. Bill

You may need to "roll" the belt on one of the pulleys.

If you can get it on with the minimun adjustment, get it tight and run it in for about 10 minutes. When everthing cools off enough, retighten the belt so that the longest span has about 1" of movement when you push and pull it at that centerpoint of the span.

Your 92 has the same exact serpentine set up as my 91, if you have A/C. First of all, you have no idler pulley that will adjust on your 92. The only adjustable pulley in the system is the Power Steering pump. If you have the correct belt, the PS pump adjusts over plenty for you to easily slide the belt over the pulley and then you tighten it accordingly. If you have it adjusted all the way in and you're still having to pull it hard to slip it over the PS pulley, IT IS THE WRONG BELT!!! If the guys at Pep boys won't give you a different belt then take it back and get your money back and go to a different parts store to get the correct belt.
