sounds like you have to prime it to get it to fire

fuel pump..

there is a ball bearing that keeps fuel pressure in the fuel rail to the injectors. when that ball bearing sticks open it allows the fuel to run all the way back to the tank. so when you are cranking the 3 times the fuel has to get back from the tank to the injectors.

that being said you can avoid the 3 crank thing by turning the key on for about 20 seconds and let the pump build up pressure.

but your going to need a new pump

'99 model year? Always include, they are not all the same.

I added an external check valve to my '93 to solve this, but I don't think that is an option with the '99.

what he is saying that he put an external ball bearing like what i was talking about above outside of his fuel pump. so he wouldnt have to drop the tank to replace the fuel pump just for a little bearing

OP, I can tell you that adding an external check valve between the fuel tank and fuel filter is not an option on the '99. I should have been more specific but didn't know for sure what year you have. Numbers in the username often refer to something else.

Have you checked for leaky injectors?
