Does any one know if to much play on the axle shaft would cause a knocking noise while in drive and a grinding noise while reversing? or is there anything else that might cause that? No noise noted while idling.

I just update the problem. Didn't proof read it. A friend told me that to much play on the axle shaft may be causing my problem.. I was wondering if that would cause the knock and grinding noise.
