I've never done any sort of axle seals, or even seen them for that matter, but i need to replace them.

Here's what i need;

Front Axle; (1999 HP D30)

- Axle Tube Seals

Rear Axle; (1988 D44)

- Axle Seals
- Bearings On Axles
- Was Told To 'Make Sure I Change Out The Bearing Raceway'.

Does this order have everything i need?

Top picture is listed as a "Differential bearing and seal kit, Spicer 44-1HD; 8.5" R.G.; Rear.

Bottom picture is listed as a "Front, Dana/Splicer 30 axle, 4WD Axle Shaft Seal'. Is that an 'axle tube seal'?

That first pic is basically an "install kit" for swapping and setting up ring and pinion. Not the axle shaft bearings/retainers/seals your looking for..

2nd pic doesn't look correct for D30 axleshaft seals either. Although it may be the seal needed for the CAD side of a D30.. which you don't have in a 99.

Ebay for the D44 stuff, look up seller Foothill Offroad. They have good pricing on the parts you need. Give me a bit and i'll provide the part numbers as I have a set sitting awaiting installation..

Oh god I forgot to mention this;

The rear axle is a D44 from an 88 and the front is a HP D30 from a 99 or so. (Not a vacuum disconnect axle.)

Both are in my garage and I can take pictures of them if that helps.

That's fine. Take as long as you need. I'm not in a hurry at all just happy someone's willing to help. I've never seen any of these parts before so I haven't a clue as to what they should look like.

That Timkin seal you show is the same as I just got for the LEFT on my D-30/CAD. I'm not sure but I think you want that one on the right as well.

That larger seal in your kit looks like the one I got to go in my Disco. (CAD)

You generally always Keep bearings and races matched.

These are the seals that require the carrier to come out to be installed, correct? Those are the ones i need.

Correct, it's a "dry tube" style axle meaning the seals are outside the carrier bearings. Whereas your 44 is a "wet tube" with the seals at far end of tube outside the axle shaft bearings.

Since you mentioned never doing this job, your gonna take the 44 parts to someone with a shop press right?

The front seals you can do at home with some all-thread and nuts/washers.

Forgot to mention Frank at Serious Off-Road here can probably hook you up quickly too.. he's a sponsor here.

I'm just figuring this out myself. What I'm thinking is if you don't have a disco, you will want that same timkin on both sides. Me thinks the larger diameter seal in your kit is for the outer in a Dana 30 with CAD, (a disco).

I gather with a normal 30, both seals are on the diff by the carrier. With a disco, one is out, outside of the disco, so it stays wet.

Their are pics in my thread here. https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/dan...172988/index2/

I'll contact Frank from serious offroad. He's bound to know what i need and i'd like to support a vendor.

I have access to a shop press. I've just never had to press on bearings or anything like that so i'm clueless.

I know i need 03-06 Rubicon retainers though as my 44 is going to be fitted with ZJ disc brakes. I'd assume this means isntead of pressing the D44 retainer back on, i'd leave that off and just press the JK one on, correct?

So on the 44 i don't have to remove the carrier to do any of this because it's a wet tube, correct? However, on the D30, i'm going to need to remove the carrier to change the seals because it's a 'dry tube', correct?

This is starting to make sense.

Flintstone, i think your logic is correct. I know gear oil lubricates the CAD or shifter motor or whatever needs oil in there, and when/if you get rid of the two piece vacuum axle you pull the carrier and put a seal there to make it a dry tube axle.

Using the terms just overland just taught me already.

Oh, and one more question. Can i remove the steering knuckles without removing the ball joints? I want to just remove the knuckles so i can clean the axle up better and paint the knuckles so they don't rust. Do i need to remove the ball joints?
