Default Mystery Location of Heater Core 1996?

Hi,

Heater core went out, have put it off for a few months, but winter is coming.

The first thing want to know is where is in inside, can only see the 2 tubes on firewall. If knew exactly what it looks like, could figure out inside location and orientation, But catalogs show very different 96 cores, even from same company, as pics below at links show.

http://autoorder.net/product/Crown-A...ater-Core.html
and http://autoorder.net/product/1984-19...-94-95-96.html

and another company shows one that would be parallel not perpendicular to dash for 96 XJ.

So tried to find video or picture or drawing where it is, that is where mystery starts.

There are many pics and videos of replacing it, but they show every thing except taking the core out, where it is:
is 5 min speed up of whole job, except the core location.

After 1 hour of searching images and videos this is the only picture of location have found: http://www.naxja.org/forum/showthread.php?t=931690 but it is a 1989, is it the same? It shows it parallel to firewall over trans hump.

This shows 1996 with dash out, but not core: https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/199...cement-184259/ here on Cherokeeforum,

but the core could be in that black box with yellow tag, at right angle to dash, or it could be over trans hump parallel.

Greatly will appreciate it if someone can tell me where the core is, and orientation. You can mark up this attached photo which is IDed as a 96 XJ.

Thanks!

whole dash needs to come out. Youtube is your friend. Mine on my 94 took 4-5 hours with 2 of us. Taking breaks of course.

Hi Max, Do you remember where it was? Parallel to firewall or at right angle?

Thanks

Default Correct Heater Core for 1996 XJ

Is where these folks say what it looks like http://www.jeep4x4center.com/air-con...ting-parts.htm

Here is another, but the image URL does not work: http://www.4wheelparts.com/Heating-C...=519&t_pt=7988 Its at right angle to firewall. Both sellers say 1996 XJ heater core but totally different heater cores.

Am starting to think www.4wheelparts.com is wrong about heater core type. As they also say 84-96 yet the 1989 pics you linked to are clearly for a firewall parallel core over trans hump.

Unless someone knows different here, will proceed with getting a core that looks like

Thanks

The leak came down the right side of trans hump. So gives even more verification this picture is correct for 1996 heater core type and location.

Freedgr, I see after reading entire thread that post you linked to has an easier way to replace the core than std take the dash and steering column out, and many folks say it works.

Thanks!! That will save me time.

Default More photos of Heater core and AC evap

https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f51/dash-removal-35444/

Shows the entire set up and the airflow, now I know the whole setup. Its on a post here about removing the dash with many more pics.

May give me some ideas as AC has not worked in 3-4 years. maybe kill 2 birds with one job.
