mysterious honking?
Ok, so here's my problem. Sometimes when I turn on my xj the horn just starts honking in a random pattern and stops immediately when you press on the horn again. This only happens when the steering wheel has been locked and usually only when it is turned slightly after the key is turned. Anyone know what this is or why it is doing this. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Maybe but everything I've heard would make it seem like that should make the horn not work.

It could but all your horn button is completing a circuit so if there is a broke wire in concat with the clock spring that could cause it to. Or a broken wire in the collum

That's what it sounds like to me is the horn circuit is shorting. I had a 94 xj that if you touched the metal on the steering wheel and pressed the horn it would tingle like a shock pen. Mine was shorted somewhere. I took off my horns any way

In all actuality your ignition is push button the key and tumbler thats in the collom pushes a rod into a switch. The switch should be halfway down the collom or almost at the bottom at least on the ones I've worked on we're. The simplest way you could do it would be from the solenoid to a push button. But you would still need your key to in lock your steering wheel unless you never lock it or take out the star plate

I don't see why it's a problem. It sounds awesome, actually.
IN all seriousness, my horn will only work if the steering wheel is turned a certain direction. I can only honk at someone if I jerk the wheel suddenly to the right. My old 4Runner did the same thing. It finally got fixed when the mechanic replaced something or other in the column that was also causing the dimmer switch not to work (when I went to dim the brights, all the lights would go off, and not come back on unless I pulled over, shut off the vehicle, and restarted -- adventure!).
