My xj keeps dying, completely random.
I bought it bout 5 weeks ago cause the po couldnt figure out why it did it. He replaced the tps and a few other sensors, I read the engine codes and found a problem with the auto shutdown. So I replaced the pcm (dealer said that was the problem). and the relay, it worked great, no more random stalling.....for about 2 weeks. Now its doing it again. Completely random, put it in park and it starts right up. Im trying to sell it to get a 98-99 but I need to fix this problem first. Its a 93 auto with 4.0

Possibly the Crankshaft Positioning Sensor. My 2000 was just doing this and after replacing every sensor and a full tune up I found this forum.
Bam changed it and all is good to go. I caused random stalling with no studder and would start right back up.

You can test a crank sensor, but testing is not always conclusive.
I buy plenty of aftermarket parts, but the crank sensor is one part that I buy ONLY from a dealer.
I cannot tell you how many people I have helped troubleshoot through a problem with a bad (new) aftermarket crank sensor.
It is worth EVERY PENNY you will spend, and it is probably only about $20 more. Do it.

Well I tested my crank sensor per the directions in my haynes manual and it tested fine, I know that may not mean anything. While I was just messon w it the problem wentfrom random stalling to stalling with in 10 seconds from start up to now not starting at all.... Im kinda stumped, thinkin bout just replacing the crank sensor but I dont have the money to just throw parts at this. Any ideas?

Well I can tell you mine sensor failed finally because I waited so long and it wouldn't start at all. But I am by no means a mechanic and only stating what i've read and worked for me.

So I pulled there sensor out and cleaned it, it was covered in grime. No change tho, it starts againbut dies within 5 mins. Guess ill wait and see if I can get a sensor tomorrow. I have a feeling that it wont change anything tho. I really thought I had this problem fixed when I replaced the pcm

Crossing fingers for ya bro. When mine decided to go it went from stalling 1-2 times a week to 7 times on the way home from work to dead in front of my house.
Look up some threads in here regarding that sensor and read some of the guys descriptions of their issues and see if they fall in with your troubles.

Ya ive read many, some fit some dont. Ive decided that ill get one from a jy, not usually what id do but considering the cost and the possiblity of it not working, ill prob get 3or 4 for about $10

Check your O2 sensors, especially the front one. Look under the loom to see if the wire insulation is bust. I had the same problem as you. Ended up having to change the O2 sensor wire harness. But since then, no problems so far! I'm building up the confidence to take it on trail. Randomly dying XJ is no bueno when you ride alone like I do most of the time.
