hey i have an 87 drivetrain with the BA-10 transmission. now i know the BA-10 is pretty low quality to begin with, and i do have an AX-15 replacement in my future, however, i wanted to see if i could get some advice on my current trans whenther or not i sell it or rebuild. the gear shifter will move around. it has plenty of play as if it is in neutral, but the trans is deinately in reverse and not budging. if i try to move the gear shifter into any gear, its completely locked out. it will not even go into reverse, even though that is the gear its stuck in. i was wondering if anyone has any idea on what the problem is. i could use some help so that i have an idea whats wrong if i sell it as a bad trans or junk it, or whatever. i just want to know if it could be something more simple that i am assuming.
I have worked on manual trans before -first off is the linkage all good -second-usually if old and beaten they are removed and visually inspected inside-for the most part you will always find a synchro-shift fork-bearing-something that is worn badly.
The access plate can be removed on many and the linkage disconnected-possibly dropping the crossmember to let it hang some and if you know what your looking for you will find it -I would see the rebuilders who know using a large screwdriver to move the inside parts around and find whats wrong-maybe a piece will even be laying in the bottom. I'm not talking about your trans but just manuals in general.
If needing a rebuild its disassembled and anything that needs replacing is ordered. I have seen some HUGE tabs $$$ for some manual rebuilds.
