you have to get different shocks regardless of how you lift it.

Look at the junkyard parts sticky and search add a leaf, budget boost, budget lift and bastard pack.

start checking out craigslist and the forum classifieds daily. It may take longer but you will find some great deals on there for the components.

You will need:

front coils
rear leafs or add-a-leafs
maybe longer shackles
shocks for 2-4" of lift

If you go kit - these are the cheapest kit's you'll find

Get a haynes or chilton and go by what it says to say remove springs and if you need help ask... at least get a book and look through it and see if its something you would want to tackle.

Unless you picked up a cherry, bump the lift and cool neon lights... Maintenance, maintenance, maintenance... My current XJ is my fifth Jeep and the reason is their reliability and versatility. The way to go is even if your Jeep is stock, you still have to "go back" to stock before you have fun. Gotta take care of what you already got. I bought my last XJ completely stock when I was 18, "fixed it", and then had fun. But I think the only real way to have fun is to do it yourself. You don't learn how to do it unless you try.

Scratch that, $1400. Forgot the replacement head.
Sounds familiar. Picked up a '00 Sport w/80k on it for about half of book value and keep finding more "cool" things daily.

Much more than you could buy a comparable one for now... Sold it a few years back. And that was probably right around 6" of lift.
