But yeah, what all does that gizmo do? Looks a litte more sophisticated than your average OBD sensor.

I like his tigger tablecloth. And is that what it is an OBD scanner? I wasn't too sure as that is not a tool I need for my Jeep.

Ok, well the picture is of the snap on solus scanner, you purchase it as a complete diag system, it has complete info on every US domestic car from 1976 to 2006 (im updating to 2007 this week) Asian and I just added european(900 bucks)
You can pull up the scope screens and watch what all the sensors are doing , it gives you the minvalues the maxvalues and shows you where your sensors are in relation to that, i just found my o2 sensor is max'd out at 4.98 volts, not vary'ing at all, and is only running open loop. anything over 4 volts form the o2 sensor on a renix system is going make a severe lean condition, thus why my jeep runs like crap!.

it monitors MAF, TPS, CPS, etc etc all on screen at one time, so you can watch .

i can even bleed the brakes on new GM"S with this sucker!

And the tigger stuff is what i am covering my seats in my jeep with, lol just kidding, i took the picture in my sons room, it has good light!

Ok I'll bite where did you get it and how much? Where does it plug in on a Renix (two yellow ports) and does it come with adapters and modules for different years and models or are they all programed in to the unit?

It comes with every adaptor and info on every car produced between 76-07, so on my 89 renix system jeep i just hook it up under the hood to the two ports with the yellow boots. you dont need any modules to plug in, its all stored within the unit , it has One CF card for extra storage.
I just bought this used from Snap On, it was $2600 with european software.
if you buy it new with standard domestic software they are about $5800.

This is the one I have heard about for years and thought it was a myth. Great tool if it works as well as the tales about it. Snap-on only made a short run of them and discontinued them with the advent of OBD or so the tales go.

I think that was the model before this, it had a similar look but it has scroll buttons instead of push buttons, It wouldnt do ODB-2 tho, so its pretty useless now, they stopped making my model just over a year ago, now they have the solus pro which is the same but has a rechargable battery and a slightly larger screen ( for us old farts with bad eyes).

Yeah its a lot of money to spend but im a mechanic, thats my job, i use it every day, it is not something i would spend if it was just a hobby, hell no! it should pay for itself within 2 years with all the extra diag work i can do.

It is an amazing piece of equipment, i can even watch all of my transmission components working and shifting whilst i drive.

jesus tap dancin christ! thats like four times what i paid for my jeep,you can knock autozone but it's free....unless your charging people to diagnose their vehicles i don't know how that would pay for itself,but good for you that you can afford it

Lets get this straight, autozone do not diagnose vehicles, they plug in a code reader and tell you the code, that is not diagnosing a problem, if you have a lean o2 code they will sell you and o2 sensor when the chance is there are another ten things that could be causing the code, you can spend a lot of money guessing and replacing parts, you are better off taking your car to a shop and paying an hours diagnostic fee and replacing the corrrect part first time around.

I get asked all the time at work, can you clear my check engine light? i tell them sure we can do that, its an hours labour to hook up the scan tool and diagnose it, then they say, oh i just want it cleared, "jiffy lube do it for free", people do not understand, the CEL is on for a reason, to alert you of a problem, I do not clear lights unless the problem has been fixed, jiffy lube, autozone and napa cannot diagnose CEL, they just tell you the codes,
