It's a convenient way to know you're at 212 degrees. A 190 should be fully open just before the water boils.

Then add a little celery, some noodles...

I guess, I didn't explain it good enough.
Let us say Advance moved 1/4 inch, NAPA 1/2 inch

So how far open is that "no t-stat" when the needle reaches the red?

Again, a t-stat does one thing only.....control minimum temp. All of the other cooling system components, their condition, along with ambient temp and driving conditions determine max coolant temp.

A thermostat will keep a min operating temp of aprox 195.

If you are worried about overheating, then you have other issues with your cooling system.
I proper working thermostat will not cause overheating, just prevent over cooling.
Ive had nothing but problems with thermostats and this is Arizona its hotter than the very bowels of hell down here. Im simply asking if 165-180 is too cold and if Its risky running it like this. I know what a thermostat does.

I dont worry about it much anymore and it never reached red line, got close but it never actually overheated. The manual switch I have for the electric fan keeps it from getting too hot.

Just put a factory stat in it and be done with it.

gets close but no cigar and only at slow speeds aka wheeling does it heat up more than usual.

Might just have to but this is how it was when I was troubleshooting overheating problems. I went through 3 thermostats none of them opened up and one was $10 fail safe t stat.......

tstat=overheating

no tstat= temp fine

Next time i put in a t stat I think im gonna do the 2 hole mod.
