I am about to put a head on my dad's 4.0. Valve job is $200 and mill the head flat is $75.
Distilled water picked up last night was 93 CENTS per gallon. I got 4 gallons for $4. Put two gallons of water with two gallons of coolant gives you 4 gallons...All for about $22 total for a clean motor.
I would say its the rear freeze plug. It has one on the back of the head. I don't need pics to see the head sitting on the bench. I just finished porting it for dad. It has a plug on the rear for certain.

Does anyone know for sure if there are freeze plugs behind the flywheel/flexplate? I would hate to rebuild that head and have the well water eat another plug in a week or two. I think to be safe he should replace them all. JMHO though.

I can't remember about the block for certain. And I don't have a 4.0 on the stand.
Not the best picture in the world...
http://images.google.com/imgres?imgu...icial%26sa%3DG
It does NOT show a brass plug in the back of the block...only in the head.
I believe there is two pipe thread plugs in there on the rear of the block...but not a freeze plug.
The only plug I know of is on the rear of the head.
As for 200 for machine. The valve job around here includes. Removing valves...Cleaning them of all carbon. Hot tanking the head. Grinding the valves and head either 3 OR 5 angle. Then painting the head. Then they balance the load on the springs with shims...Then reassemble the head with springs, shims, NEW valve seals.
Honestly for 200 bucks...that is one hell of a deal. And like said above. 350s are a dime a dozen. Shops run 50 chevys a week and ONE jeep head a YEAR. Setup time takes money from their pocket...but chevy guys pay 200 also. Its a flat rate.

You can get a reman head for cheaper..Where I bought my motor the heads are $175 w/$115 core charge not sure what shipping would be but might be easier and cheaper..call city motor supply web site is citymotorsupply.com. Might be worth checking as you'd get a complete head..pop yours off put this on ship back and be all done..no need for any additional work behind the machine shop work..Anyways just another option and these guys do damn good work.
