Default my friend bumped it into reverse while going 35!

I was driving up a hill yesterday in my beloved xj when my friend wanted to play a trick and throw it into nuteral!, but he accidentaly put it in reverse.

It diddnt stall, it just screeched the tires and I immideatly put her back in neutral and cursed at my stupid friend, there were no nasty grinnding noises and everything seems to be working well now

I just want to know how tough this jeep is and if it will have any future problems with the tranny, driveshaft, or rear axle because of this.

Many moons ago we had a ford torino & were trying to narrow a rumbling noise down & accidentally went thru neutral to reverse too.

Engine stalled & we thought "uh-oh". But it restarted & went fine for years until we sold it. So I think if its OK now, it will continue to be...

eh its probably fine.

my friend used to do 50 mph in his XJ and throw it up into park and back down to drive. sometimes it would catch, sometimes it wouldnt.

he sold it and we still see it around occasionally lol.

I had my egr valve stuck open once. I had to drive it home keeping the foot on the gas and shift it to neutral every time i had to brake. at a turn i was going 40 and accidentally put it into reverse, the wheels (31s) locked with a huge KLUNK and i did a 180° landing on the sidewalk. I said heck i cracked the thing in half but as soon as i shifted to D i was surprised to see that it worked again. The thing is damn tough.
Anyway check your engine mounts you might have ripped the rubber.

I believe that "most newer" vehicles have a mechanism built in that helps prevent severe damage if/when this occurs. Wished I could recall exactly what it was

that's why you don't push the button in to shift into neutral.
just push the shifter up, there is a reverse lock. that's what the button is for.

the worse may just be the drive shaft u-joints.

most auto transmissions will stay in neutral if you shift into reverse untill you stop. its a safety thing

The lock on the shifter that keeps it from hitting reverse has been disabled on my 96 Cherokee (by previous owner). I don't recommend this, but we were doing 75 on the interstate in the fast lane and one of my dogs bumped it all of the way into reverse. The tires were squealing and smoking and it shut the engine down. I threw it in neutral and got it to the shoulder. After a quick inspection, I started it back up and hopped back on the freeway. No apparent problems. I did end up changing the tranny later, but that was about another 100k after the the incident, the truck had almost 270k when I had to replace the tranny. I think they are tough as nails. Oh and dogs are banished to the back seat at ALL times now.
