I just purchased my first Cherokee. It was my brothers and somehow he hit a tree at low speed. He originally planned to fix it an keep driving it but he fell into a good deal on a 4runner and so I bought the Cherokee from him. It's a 1998 4x4 2-door Sport 5-speed 4.0L w/ 207,000 miles.
I have had a Toyota & a F-150 in the past (plus some others not worth mentioning) but this is my first experience with a Jeep, so far I'm hooked. The repair from the accident still needs some finishing touches and there is some other maintenance issues due to the high miles, such as front end bushings and a tune-up. Over-all it runs and drives great but I will probably have some questions for you guys over the next year or so.
My first question is about the missing vacuum canister that was destroyed in the accident. I noticed the disconnected vacuum line right away (the passenger side plastic inner fender has not yet been reinstalled) and capped it off until I could do some further investigating. I am pretty sure that I have found a replacement and I will post a link here to see if anyone can verify that it is what I am looking for. There is also a electrical connector hanging loose right next to the vacuum line. I think that this is for a factory fog light option since it is only two wires and is in the right location but I wanted to verify that this is not for some sort of vacuum canister with a sensor on it or something.
Thank you for your help in advance.
Is this the correct vacuum canister, it is the second to last part listed on the page of this link, the one for 1997-2001? (I am looking for the canister that should be connected to the vacuum line under the passenger headlight behind the bumper.): http://www.teamcherokee.com/Emissions/index.html

the round ball looking thing that your missing is the cruise control vacuum booster... that might not be what its called word for word, but when I put my aftermarket bumper on my 98 I just plugged the line and it was good to go...
the wires are not for a vacuum sensor of any sort.

Yes, I think that is it. I only have the vacuum line hanging there connected to nothing so that's why I don't know exactly what it looks like. But the vacuum line is hanging right next to the horn so I think it's safe to say that's it. It's also good to know that it uses no electrical connector. The horn is plugged in and working so I still don't know what the connector is for. I still think it might be for a factor fog light option. I know that my dads Dodge Ram had the connectors just hanging next to the fog light opening before we put a factory set of fog light in it.
Also, the cruise control (module, actuator, whatever its called) is connected to the same vacuum line as this with a tee just up-line of where the vacuum canister should be. So maybe it is referred to as a cruise control booster sometimes?
Nice diagram, I have searched everywhere for one like that (I was close to purchasing one of those online repair manuals but I wanted to get some reviews on them first).

go on down to a junk yard, there you will find everything that you'll need super cheap. Untill then just plug that hose with a bolt the same size and a zip tie, you'll be fine untill you get to the yard... like I said I ran with a bolt and zip tie on mine for two years and it never did anything wrong.

I just ordered the one in the link I posted. It matched the one in the diagram and it was $12 after shipping. Until then I have it capped off with a screw and some electrical tape. Thanks for your help though, I appreciate it and the diagram you posted ensured me that the one I purchased was the right one (if you open the link i posted and scroll down to the bottom it is the second to last one, if you click on "more details" it will bring up some pictures of the various years and the bottom two are pics for the 97-01. It matches the diagram).

I bought one of the online repair manuals for $4.99 on ebay. It has more information than I have ever seen in a haynes. Very technical and you do have to know what you're looking for...sometimes I don't. For the price, you can't go wrong!
