Possible problems, NSS, starter, voltage to starter, battery, bad connection to battery (terminals), ignition switch. That's all I can think of... Check em all

don't necessarily worry about the green wire not having power yet. Short them together and see if it starts. If it does, then there's only a couple other things to check. We'll worry about that later- just see if it starts by bumping the starter over.

This pic's not so good but might help. That's the starter relay. You can see its diagram back in post #74. I believe the upper little green wire should get current and light your test light when you turn the key to start. I doubt it's the bottom one but it might be. When that relay is grounded by the NSS and gets power from the key, it should power up that green solenoid wire. (when that solenoid wire gets current, the starter should go, even if its in gear)

EDIT! WRONG! IN THIS PHOTO OF THE START RELAY ON MY 90, THE [U]BOTTOM[U] SMALL GREEN WIRE IS IGNITION POWER (TO START)
Cherockee, we where typing at the same time, didn't mean to contradict!

I guessing it doesn't click or try to start when you jump power to the solenoid wire/post? First thing to try is to whack it good, (the starter), with something like a hammer, WHILE you are jumping power to the solenoid. If it starts, get another starter. If it doesn't, jump to your jeep with cables from another car. Try the same process again. If it still doesn't start, get another starter.
I have had it work smacking the starter, then going in and starting it with the key, but was surprised, (and pleased), that that worked.

ok everybody i jumped my starter and it started first try but the starter did not stop running for probably 10 seconds after i started it... now because im gettin dash lights that should mean that my ignition switch is functioning properly. therefore would it be my starter relay has gone out and why is my starter still running wen i have disconnected my jumper

I'm glad you got it running. As for what to do next I would recommend replacing that starter relay. It sounds like when you jumpered power over to the green wire it got stuck "on", which isn't uncommon for faulty relays. DFlintstone should probably take over from here as I'm not as familiar with the older Renix Jeeps, principals are the same but the location and systme diagrams are different than what I have. Good luck!

"people who want to actually help?" Cruiser is one of the most helpful, knowledgeable people on this site. Lucky that your problem is simple enough a bone-head like myself can help since he got driven crazy. I'm 1/2 just here learning to type and spell, this beats typing "the quick brown fox jumped over the lazy dog's head" over end over!
Does your starter relay look like the one in the photo above? If so, see if the LOWER small green wire is getting power when you turn the key to start.
The dash light's are a different contact in the switch. If you pull that lower wire off the relay and check for power there while you turn the key, that will check...allot, including the switch and the wire to the relay.

If all the connections to the relay have not been checked/cleaned, now might be a good time!
