my 98 will sputter and pop
ok while searching for a cure for my jeep i cam across the sight and decided to join lets see if the combined power of all you jeep lovers can outsmart the local dealerships
the problem has been going on for 2 years she will randomly loose power and start sputtering if i put the accelerator to the floor, i hear a pop under the hood and she takes off like a shot. it seems to only do it once per trip dont know if that means anything but it is info
at idle it runs like crap will almost die rev up sputter sputter almost die rev up over and over and over
jeep said it was the o2 censers but that did nothing to fix it i had the exhaust checked and it is all in working order
i really want to fix this and i have seen several people one the net with similar trouble but no answers
help help oooooo please help thanks

Does it sound like its backfireing through the throttle body? Is that the popping your hearing? If so ,it might be your timing. I say might be , because you said it dont do it all the time. Mine did the same thing but it did it on a regular basis. It was the timeing. Good luck.

it does it at random and it does sound like that but sometimes itll backfire through the exaust too. sometimes it does wen ur trying to take off from a stop and then somtimes wen your cruising at highway speeds if you let your foot off the gas and then give it gas again it stops. it never does it if the rpms are way up

if mine does it , it is always when i am accelerating ant it is usually within the first 15 min of the trip the pop does sound like it is "backfiring" under the hood

i was wandering how much vacuum might figure into this i know when i cut the front bumper i had to relocate the cruse control ball witch is part of the vacuum system and it now is kind of cobbled together just wandering if that might have created a vacum issue that was causing other trouble

your alternator might be on its way out.not givin enough juice, having intermittent(random) misfires,
so its puttin more gas in the cylinder than it can fully ignite , and its just compressing the gas and backfiring...
this was the problem on mine...
check the alt

You're sure the plugs are wired in the correct order? It's (7-beer-tune-up) been known to happen... especially when the Lions are (losing) on tv...

ok just finished the tune up plugs, wires ,cap, and roter .Wile im sure it did not hurt it also did not fix the problem. I did find mud in the cap so im glad i changed it seems to idol better but the sputtering and backfiring happened before i made it around the block it backfired throw the intake about 5 times
as a side not i did test the alternator by disconnecting the battery while the jeep was running and she ran like a top to i think that suggestion was a bust. So whats next lets keep the ideas commong
