My 2WD to 4WD conversion project
I am turning my 2x4 93 i6 4.0 Cherokee into a 4x4. using a 89 Cherokee i6 4.0 at the junkyard.
Im going to be posting my progress...
Heres the donor. at the local pick your part in bakersfield.
I replaced my cracked head with this same Cherokee last week.
This is as far as we got today.
Got the entire front end out. Cost $190.
Was alot of fun.
Gonna grab the TCase and Tranny tomorrow.
Day 2
Made a trip back to junkyard. Here we go.
Decided to drop Engine with Tranny, there were stripped bolts on top of the Tranny to block. Couldn't get a good bite.
Even picked up a passenger window, trunk door plastic panel, and two 4x4 plastic signs (the last piece to be put on)
Heres my soon to be 4x4
Put her on blocks.
Took off worthless front end, my wife even helped.
And dropped worthless tranny.
Dropped my first and second tranny in one day. im sore.

Got some more stuff done.
Cleaned up new tranny/t case (forgot to state that i got both for $280 at the junkyard) and front end.
Finished pulling old tranny out. Check the comparison out.
Was getting ghetto with installing tranny. Its hard not to with no help and wrong tools.
Here was the highlight of the tranny/tcase install.
My favorite part.
Im pretty stoked. I got a whole day in front of me. Hopefully i finish.
But im still confused about this speedometer cable coming from the rear retainer in the tcase. I posted a picture in this topic.
What does it plug into?

Coming along nicely..
On the new trans in the picture... the vent line. Now is the time to extend it.. run it up along side the vent for the front axle on firewall by the master cylinder.
That speedometer cable in the donor transfercase (manual speedo)... pull it out. Take the speedo housing from your old transmission and install into the new transfercase. Check the depth from where it sits down to bottom of speedo gear. You probably have to swap the gear. Then extend the wiring harness so it comes back to the transfercase now. Your 93 has an electrical speedo.
Also, compare the transmissions kickdown cable length to the old one. You may have to swap that as well.. iirc the HO engines is longer. Now is the time to install a new trans filter.
I did my swap to my 94 XJ using parts from my 88 rolled XJ.

Here ya go.. you'll see there are two different length speedo gear shaft lengths. I couldnt remember exactly what i did but from your pic it appears i used all the 2wd stuff into the older transfercase.
Wheres the short shaft speedo that came out of the 2wd trans?

Oh DUH!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gotta pull old gear as well.
She fit good. But the cable was barely not long enough. so im gonna have to lengthen.
Whats the best way to go about that?
i was thinking just cut the wires, tape more wire in between.

LOL.. thats why were here dude!
Yes, cut and add some wire. Crimp it and take a piece of heat shrink tube from the AP store and shrink it down with a lighter. That'll be much better than expecting tape to hold up.
