AT to MT
hey guys,
i know its probably been asked before, and im looking more for input as far as how dificult it is to go from an auto to a manual tranny, i used to have a second car that was my dd, was a 93 vw jetta 5 speed, i kinda miss the 5 speed lol, how hard is it to do that swap on an auto? i know what it entails (clutch cylinders, drilling for pedals, etc etc) but all in all how dificult is it really?
im sure thats an opinion/skill question, but for a guy whos done 3x head gasket, tranny swap on a wj (auto to auto, replacement i should say), t-case work, and alot of electrical work on it, how hard would you say it is?
(using those as examples of how experienced i kinda am at working on it :P)
sorry for a long drawn out question

Well its just like any tranny swap but you need the following parts off the top of my head:
clutch
flywheel
throw out bearing
m/c,
slave cylinder
clutch pedals
computer from one with a manual.
I almost think you would be better off just buying a manual XJ unless you already have a donor and can get one for cheap.

I'm relatively sure that the bolt pattern on the transmission crossmember is the same. The PCM would be different, the wiring would be different. Ironically, the wiring would probably be the worst part. The hookups at the throttle body would be different since the throttle body tells the transmission to shift. Not horrible, but certainly not easy. You'd need a new transfer case, as well. I'm about 98% sure that a Tcase from an auto doesn't bolt onto a manual. It would be so much easier to buy a 5spd XJ, but I understand where you're coming from. I wanted one for years and finally found one. I am about to turn 296,000 on the clock and just dropped a new transmission in it...I have no desire to get rid of it. I love my manual XJ.

Simplest way I can think of would be to find a donor xj with a mt and swap everything, that way you know exactly how everything is routed.
