Motor revs than slams into gear.

Motor revs than slams into gear.
I am having a problem with my tranny engaging into first from a stop. It does not happen all the time. and usually happens when I am at a stop sign. But I will accelerate and the motor will rev for a second than it slams into gear. any idea what the problem could be?
