The transfer case is leaking too-doesn't the whole transmission need to be removed to get to that?

No. A leak at the rear of the transfer case can be fixed while its still in the car. That can be fixed by anybody with hand tools a willingness to do it.

A leak at the front of the transmission requires pulling the whole transmission out (its mated to the engine at the front). Depending on what is leaking, it may either be a simple repair (input seal) or maybe a big repair (torque converter), but any competent mechanic should be able to fix both of those. A transmission shop will want to charge for a full rebuild no matter what, which may be unnecessary. So have a regular mechanic diagnose the leak first.

Ok, I have a mechanic that can look at it but he's always so busy. I want to do it myself. Gotta figure out exactly where the leaks are coming from.

Transfer case output seals you could handle yourself, probably. Others, take a lot more work. IF he is good, and can be trusted for opinion, trans seals may be more of a nuisence. Obviously if you have to add fluid very often, it needs to be fixed. If it's a drop or so maybe not so pressing of an issue.

Thanks, is there a write-up on the transfer case output seals, or vid? Not needing to add fluid. Just got under, and looks like small leak from the oil pan too. I'm pretty sure that needs a new gasket.

Taking it off trans is not hard ....Its lifting it out and putting it back is the difficult part. It can fall and seriously hurt some one. Having a shop do it would be best for you .

Again repair shop ......Its costly. Youve done alot of minor repairs yourself and had great success but your getting into a area that should be handled by repair shop. Or some one with experince in auto repairs you trust. Theres plenty of members that had issues getting this done them selves.

So, what is your plan for the trip to the experts? And who are the experts? Please don't say meineke or Firestone. Those are retail shops that only want to show you 10 "problems" of various expense and hope they scare you into buying a few of them.

Find your leaks.

Determine how much fluid you are losing over a period of time, like a month.

Report back with your findings of fluid loss and perhaps some ppl can guide you on which area is critical, and others can be left as a simple nuisance.

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE YOUR TRANSMISSION AND/OR TRANSFER CASE BY YOURSELF! YOU WILL LIKELY GET INJURED!

Ok, but the funny thing is I'm not losing fluid, I've been checking it every week. But, since the drain and fill in January, I can smell tranny fluid under the jeep but the fluid on dipstick smells good. I will be getting it looked next week, and I will report back.

Please don't forget me, I'll be back.
