No need for a new rig. Just follow the steps I posted before and you'll have a properly indexed distributor. I'm 95% positive, that's how you do it, but you can ask FrankZ since that's who I learned it from in another thread, but can't seem to find it.

Probably $100, it's not much labor. But if you change the distributor yourself, you can index the distributor yourself. All you're doing is taking it out again, turning the engine over by the harmonic balancer until cylinder one is at TDC (there may even be a hash mark on the balancer which indicates TDC when the mark is at the top), and reinstalling the distributor with the rotor pointing towards cylinder one (the 5 o'clock position).

Alright, I guess I'm getting good at this stuff then, because I only read his instructions once on another thread. At first I forgot to write some helpful hints, but remember when proofreading. You should have no problem doing this if you changed the distributor yourself. It should take about 20 mins which includes removing that annoying distributor hold down bolt.

No need to bother Franky.
To the OP, did you mess it up or no? Did you try to start it after you put the wires correctly?

There are three ways to index the distributor on a 4.0 motor: the good way, the bad way and my way.
The difficult part is to put cylinder one at TDC on the compression stroke with both valves closed.
Now many people would suggest to remove the valve cover to look at the valves, but since i hate to throw away money and work i do this without removing the valve cover, easy and money/time saving.
1- Remove the distributor and cap from the engine.
2- Rotate the crankshaft to TDC, then rotate it back (counterclockwise) 10/15 degrees.
3- remove the spark plug of cylinder one and take a piece of hose that fits tight in the spark plug thread on the head.
4- Blow air with your mouth through the hose; if you cannot blow air it means that the two valves are closed and you are ok, if you can blow air it means that the exhaust valve is open (exhaust srtoke) and you need to rotate the crankshaft another 360° to be in TDC compression stroke.
5-Rotate the crankshaft back to TDC
6-Put the distributor back on with the rotor pointing on wire 1 like in the picture i posted.
7-put the cap and wires back on like in picture.
8-start the engine and go wheeling.

When you say "you got it", do you mean you understand how to do it or you got it running right? Just make sure all the wires are in the correct place and clicked on all the way.

. I'm pretty sure this is how you do it, though.
