Default Mopar discontinued fuel filler cap

Hey guys, so I recently found out Mopar has stopped making gas caps for the XJ. What are the alternatives that actually work well? My buddy can't seem to get one that fits properly and they want almost 100 bucks on ebay for the OEM now. Was thinking he could try the Gates brand. Thanks in advance!

Any GOOD parts place should have a cap in stock. Mine broke on my 96, so I have the AutoZone Duralast one. Fit fine, with no issues.

Stant is/was the OE maker for Mopar gas caps. The usual online sites have many options (Rockauto, Partsgeek, Amazone, etc.). Gates "generally" are Stant caps as well.

Interesting. He had a Stant put on and it kept giving evap codes. So I let him borrow mine and clear the code and it was fine but obviously I needed my gas cap back eventually.

Interesting. I have a Stant on mine. Can't remember when I bought it (likely late 2000's). Had a locking gas cap. Left home with the wrong key set once and nearly ran out of gas so I replaced it. Here in CA, my cap is specifically tested as part of the evap portion of smog test. It's never failed.

I'm wondering if they gave him a grand cherokee cap. I'm in Ca too and the local parts store makes this mistake often. I always make them double check, personally.

Stant, Gates caps are now made by MotoRad( They bought out stant and are now the only player in the game). I bought a motorad locking fuel cap and had issues, it created a crazy amount of suction (I guess it wasn't venting correctly) to the point where it would cause the gasket to be almost pulled off the cap. I put on my old nonlocking cap and no issues. Maybe I just got a faulty one.

I got the P0456 a few years back and figured just buy a gas cap and see what happens.
Cheap enough so .....
Got it from my Napa and assume it is a rebranded Stant but not sure.
Put it on, cleared the code, and that was that.
Now it didn't have the leash but we have that thing in our fuel door to hang the cap on so.......

There's a locking cap on my '96 - presumably the original - anyone's welcome to for the postage rounded up to the nearest $10

This fitted on my 1990 XJ. Orielly also stocks non locking caps.
I changed mine from factory non locking to locking because of the biden gasoline prices and the theft of gasoline do to lack of prosecution of criminals.

Excellent, that's something else to look out for next time I manage to get to an O'Reilly's. The XJ's aren't a problem, 'cos the locking cap works perfectly well without locking but my KJ drives me to distraction because I have to lock/unlock it - & more often that not, I'll forget to have the key with me when I get round to the filler.

I have one in the bag still from when I thought I would need it to pass emissions... Guess that now NOS part in that bag is where it will stay until I actually need it!
