Is this a money pit or do I keep going
They have waiting lists that are weeks long.
The only reason I go to the dealer is to buy a random bolt.

Wow? What exactly is wow? We've established that: a) heater cores are said to be pain in the azz jobs. b) SOME dealers charge over $2000 for heater core jobs. (My friend paid $3000, but there might have been other work done also) I know, that's some funny **** right there. Try renting a Chris Rock video or something if you want to learn what funny actually means. In the real world, people pay these rates to dealers all day long. They make millions of dollars. You do not. Maybe you can learn something from this.
Obama is not my father.
George Carlin is funny, but you have to use your brain.
Many stealerships near me are long gone.
The only new ones are high end foreign ones.

I would be more than willing to try to replace my own heater core. The only reason I would take it to a shop was if I knew I didn't have a spare car to drive, so that IF I broke something along the way, I could stop and get the part to fix it.

lol, try doing a front AND rear heater core in a 80-90's Chevy G-van in an afternoon for your in-laws making sure everything goes back in place, works as it should and there are no rattles, than tell me how hard it is to do a heater core. After that, I fear NO heater core.
This thread gives me the giggles. Should have locked and thrown to the moderators only section for pure entertainment value and the boards de-trolled.

Well this thread really took off!!
To get back on topic and by way of an update I have found a new after market heater core here in the UK. Unfortunately I can only find one dealer and they want £100 for them and I can't find cheaper US sourced parts for RHD models. Blend doors are running at another £100 so we are £200 in so far. Booked in for next month with my mechanic to get it fitted so will let you know how it goes
I did manage to find the source of the rain water leak which is coming from the windshield so will get that fixed up.

So the first stage is complete. New Heater Core £100 including delivery, around 8 hours of labour and £200 to fit. Blend doors fixed rather than replaced (the were stuck rather than broken) and modified so they are stronger at no extra cost. So, while this sounds expensive - in the US heater cores are much cheaper but don't fit RHD Jeeps - I am actually quite pleased as I was expecting it to be more expensive. The windscreen has also been resealed with a new rubber strip fitted for £60 including the rubber seal. that's it now until the new year when we will tackle the oil leak. Also next year a 3 inch lift will be going on and some bigger wheels and tires.
