I have to change my floor in the back of my 96 sport and was wondering if making it out of fg would be good enough or should I look at a replacement floor pan?
It needs to be strong enough to carry my camping gear and diving gear ( diving doubles and stage bottles) plus daily driver stuff

hmm...of all the threads I have seen on the different Jeep forums regarding replacing the floors I have not seen anyone mention FG before.
Its an interesting option for those of us that dont weld...but there may be a reason for that such as overall strength, and lack of places to properly secure it to the unibody.

Good question. I suppose FG would be ok as long as you made it nice and thick, maybe made it stronger by layering something inside the glass.
I am sure one of the more experienced members will be able to give a definate answer though.

i wouldnt do it if i were in your shoes.... i mean its a good idea and all, but you have to think that it is a unibody, and even the floor pan is keeping it together.. if i were you i would want to put as strong metal as possible back there because it is keeping your jeep literally together on the road because of the fact that it is a uni.... fiberglass just isnt strong enough to me, but that is just my opinion.... metal and fg would be awesome..

Fiber glass has been tried before. The problem is that it doesn't stick to the steel very well. So It will come loose and water and dirt will work its way in and the rust will set in and you will end up with a worse problem and a big mess. Steel pan is the only way to go.

i work in a body shop and use fiberglass for tons of stuff it will work fine AS LONG AS YOU grind EVERYWHERE the fiberglass will be with 40 grit grinder you have to have deep scratches for it to bond correctly
do you guys have what we in england call an mot?
for legal reasons we wouldnt get that through the test as its not strong enough on a unibody, seperate chassis no problem tho.
i do think twist could cause you problems tho.

how many thicknesses would you recommend? mat or roving or both ???

yes its a test of road worthines of your vehicle, make sure its not a bag 'o' spanners lol

Well we have to get our vehicles inspected every year and the "intensity" of the inspection varies from state to state though. Some states you have the whole emissions test plus they make sure your tires are good and all your lights work.Originally Posted by sluggy

Some states are not so intense....kick your tires and make sure the lights and horn work and they pass you.

I know you didn't ask, but I used aluminum for my rear cargo area. So now when that rear hatch leaks I don't have to worry about rust.
