in all seriousness what is the physical difference. I was curious about this last night when looking at rads. napa has 2 rads $99 apart with same dimensions and I saw no difference in the description or anything other than "max cooling"

Let's try Pirate 4X4, they seem to be more knowledgeable over there....

What do u see that says max cooling and non-max cooling????? From what I've read, standard cooling is the belt driven rad fan only and HD cooling is the addition of the efan beside the belt fan.....no difference in the rads, just the number of rad fans, except for Postal RHD XJs that use a 2 row copper/brass rad.

The '99 XJ parts catalog.

5012883AA - w/o Max. Cooling

52080104AC - w/Max. Cooling

I do see reference in the FSM to Max Cooling and the electric fan.

COOLING SYSTEM FANS
All models are equipped with a viscous fan. This thermal viscous fan drive is a torque-and-temperature- sensitive clutch unit. It automatically increases or decreases fan speed to provide proper engine cooling. Vehicles with a 2.5L/4.0L engine with air conditioning, or 4.0L with “max” cooling also have an auxiliary electrical cooling fan. For individual descriptions or operation, refer to Viscous Fan Drive or Electric Cooling Fan in this group.

I have a vague recollection that the max cooling radiator doesn't have the cooling column in it for the trans fluid. That it's meant to be used with XJ's that have an external trans cooler.

Please verify this as I'm not 100% positive.

I just looked at the placard on my '99 XJ radiator and it has part number 52079 682AE, which I can't see in that '99 parts catalog.

I looked in the 2000 XJ catalog and it lists "52079 682AE Without Max Cooling". It also lists "52080 104AC With Max Cooling", which also shows up in the '99 catalog.

I have an '99 XJ built April 1999, with AW4, AC, and electric radiator fan but no trailer towing package.

Still can't figure out what the difference in radiators is.

You can always send your VIN to jeep via their website or have your local dealer look it up and they can pull what your jeep had from the factory.

Our '98 (5/98 build date) came with the 5012 883AA rad that's shown in that chart......so maybe max cooling is the Postal 2 row rad.

I believe the Max or non-Max is referring to the cooling system and not the radiator. I remember reading that all North American XJs were equipped with Max-cooling system which includes the electric fan. At least this was for 2000 MY.

Edited to add verification that all XJs with A/C had the Max-cooling system since an aux electric fan was part of that system,

My '99 has AC and an electric cooling fan to go along with the AC. But the part number on my radiator shows up in the parts catalog as a "W/O Max. Cooling".

If you are to buy a radiator based on the parts catalog part number you have a choice of W/Max. Cooling, or W/O Max. Cooling. My question was what is the difference beteen radiators for Max. Cooling and radiators without Max. Cooling.
